Anna Moriah Wilson was killed just days before a major contest.
Last week, a top cyclist from Vermont was murdered and died in Texas, just three days before she was set to ride in a high-profile competition.
According to an Austin Police Department press release, Anna Moriah Wilson, also known as “Mo,” was discovered with several gunshot wounds on the evening of May 11. Officers responded to a 911 call from a friend of Wilson’s who stated she arrived at the site to discover the 25-year-old bleeding and unconscious. She was unable to be saved by first responders.

According to the announcement, an investigation determined that Wilson was shot inside his Maple Avenue apartment, and an autopsy later confirmed the death as a homicide. A person of interest has been identified by detectives, although their identity has not been revealed.
Wilson was a rising star in the cycling industry, having grown up in East Burke, Vermont. According to Velonews, she had just travelled from Colorado to Texas to compete in the Gravel Locos competition in Hico. She was one of the race’s favourites to win.

Wilson was a competitive skier who attended Burke Mountain Academy and later Dartmouth College, according to VTDigger. She also played soccer at Dartmouth before working for Specialized Bicycles as a demand planner.
Wilson was dubbed “the winningest lady in the American off-road scene” in a lengthy interview with Velonews recorded shortly before her trip to Texas. Wilson revealed in the interview that she had just quit her day job to compete full-time.
